It was all set by the Spring 2008 fashion shows. Wedgies and platform shoes took the runway by storm. But the hottest shoe this summer season has changed and will bring new heights to all. Oh no you exclaim, not another balancing act with stilettos. Quite the contrary, fashion had a turn around and became fickle to the shows before the season officially began with the consumers. The biggest summer must have is: the reinvention of the flat.
What caused the change of what was seen on the runways of only a few months ago? The answer is former model Carla Bruni, the new and current First Lady of France. Now that the Mme. Sarkozy wore nothing but flats during official visits the last few weeks, she was awarded by the press as the "new-found" trend-setter of style.
For the past few seasons, many women have become injured staggering with clunky heels and platforms. Between trying to walk the cobblestone streets of Soho and or the hills of San Francisco all in the name of style, now women will not have to concentrate on walking.
What does that mean to you? The shipments are being expedited to your local stores faster than this article is written.
Flat shoes do wonders for your posture. With heels your legs are strained and shoulders tend to be forward. Any orthopedic will tell you the same, so while this style is hot take advantage of it for your spine and feet.
Flats are more versatile than one thinks. They can be worn well with everything except skinny jeans. Spice up that outfit of cropped wide legged pants and cigarette crops in geo-prints. Those under thirty will look so fine with wearing a mini with flats and appear gamine as Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday."
There are several types of flats to look for when shopping. The ballet flats are featured in solid colors or wild geometric prints. Ballet flats are classical, comfortable and stylish.
The gladiator sandal is in either metallic or traditional leather adorned with embellishments is also available. The only caution with the latter is that you legs should be in great shape as gladiator sandals tend to make legs appear shorter and thicker. Of course by wearing a longer ethnic style skirt will solve that problem.
Need a little height? The "Betty" pump or flat can be found in patent leather or satin, has either an open or closed toe, low heel and gives a dressier appearance. Think the glamorous smart chic era of the 1950s, perhaps Lauren Bacall whose nickname happens to be Betty. This shoe is perfect with a suit or a slim skirt
So whether you shell out $18 at Payless for a multi colored pair or the couture of Christian Dior at a hefty $550 for white flat ballet pumps, you better hurry up before the stores run out.
Wouldn't you know it? As soon as millions of gullible women learn how to walk in uncomfortable platform shoes and have healed from too many sprained ankles, the style changes.
The newest style this year, according to several fashion "experts", are ballerina flats.
Go figure. It happens every time.
I remember when platform shoes were called wedgies! I hate to disillusion anyone, but you walk in platform shoes like you do any other high heeled shoe. Either you can walk in heels without looking like a duck or you can't. Picture a cross dresser learning to walk in his first pair of high heeled shoes.

Women, or men for that matter, who walk with their feet splayed out like the Aflac duck are going to have a real problem wearing either high heels or platform shoes. Have you watched any of the tv shows where they teach men to sit, stand and walk like a woman? It's pretty hilarious. Sorry, I know it isn't their fault because they have to undo years of walking and sitting like a man and high heels make it very difficult. On the other hand, some women never get the hang of it either.
Platform shoes were all the rage last year but I go so far back that we used to call them wedgies! Can you imagine the howls of laughter if you called them that today? I didn't even know what a modern day wedgie was until my son explained it to me. Believe me, I won't call them wedgies any longer. I know, call me an old foggie but it's like everyone says, wait long enough and any fashion will come around again.
The ballerina flat shoes are a perfect example. I wonder what will happen to all those platform shoes? Goodwill or the Volunteers of America could come out the winner, they will just have to find someone who actually want them. Or you can bury them in the back of your closet and wait. Sooner or later you can drag them out again and be at the height of fashion.
Let's be technical for sec. The term evening dress or gown is used generally to refer to the type of dress women wear to a formal gathering such as weddings, proms, award ceremonies, and diplomatic events as well as other white and black tie events. Formal, that’s the word we're looking for here.
Through the years, white and black tie events have observed some changes on what constitutes formal attire. Formal evening wear were slowly integrating a much more liberal fashion approach, abandoning the stricter and traditional ways. However, regardless of these changes one thing is for certain. Any lady who is asked to attend a formal event will definitely wear her most stunning dress and most glamorous pair of evening shoes.
Just like how the perfect tie should accompany a man's well made suit, a lady's elegant designer evening dress needs to be worn with matching designer evening shoes. Evening shoes or shoes in general for that matter, have always been considered by women as an important part of their attire. Women view shoes pretty much like how they consider the rest of their clothes, as reflections of who they are.
It is, therefore, not surprising to see women paying great deals of attention on what to put on their feet. And since, during formal dinners it is expected that they'll be rubbing shoulders with dignitaries, celebrities or with rich and/or powerful people, women would always choose from their best collection of evening footwear. Formal evening shoes may either be flat shoes, pumps, sandals, platform shoes or even ballet shoes.
Other quite popular evening shoe styles are pointed toe mules, gold patent pumps, 4-inch leather thongs, and strapped high heals. Designs also vary depending on the events. You might find evening shoes that have designs more appropriate for the more conservative parties and events. Meanwhile, there are also shoes that can be worn to a more informal event.
Most of designer evening shoes have very basic and ordinary designs, it is the addition of style on a shoes' design that makes them head-turners during formal events. Well known shoe designers, have used a variety of materials, from frosted silver leathers to Swarovski crystals and even diamond studs on their products.
Among other materials that designers have used include one or combinations of the following: varieties of buckles, beads, feathers, furs, embroidery and a lot more. Just like the shoe's basic designs, this formal footwear follows the same, simple formulaic approach: evening shoes need glitter and glow.
