Style will always win over comfort for some people, and yes, those people are primarily women. Women's shoes often change with hemlines of skirts and the cut of the pants. As such, women need a large selection of shoes that will go with each of the different outfits they own. Here are some of the common types of shoes that will likely hurt:

High heels - it doesn't matter what the fashion is, high heels are always in style. These will elongate the leg and cause the wearer to appear slimmer and taller which are one of the reasons these shoes never go out of style. They will cause the wearer to place most of their weight on the front of their foot and can actually shorten the ligaments in their legs if they wear them all the time.

Pointy toes - these will come and go with the trends, but appear frequently. These are often paired with high heels. The pointy toes will compress the wearer's toes, but this is often a small price to pay in order to stay with the trends.

Strappy sandals - these are often very dainty and feminine, but will also rub on the surface of the wearer's foot where the straps dig in, causing blisters. Women often feel good wearing these shoes, as they tend to draw a lot of compliments.

Platforms - these will come in and out of fashion also, but behave similarly to high heels, in the silhouette they present. The risk of tripping on these shoes or twisting an ankle is high, but a small price to pay for being fashion forward.

Boots - these come in different heights and different heels. They may be pointy or rounded, and are often on the front of a trend. These are often a safe choice, but can only be worn with certain skirts and types of pants.

While it may seem to the casual observer that it is silly to choose fashion over comfort, this will not change until women feel comfortable bucking the trends.
